Before I gave my heart to Christ, I thought that being a Christian was just a box that you checked on forms under the “religion” section. Actually, I don’t think there was a day in my life where I didn’t consider myself a “Christian” – but the check box Christian type. Yes, I believed in God. Sure, I believed in Jesus. Isn’t that enough?
I never went to church. I never read the Bible. I rarely prayed (and when I did it was only in times of desperation). But what do those things matter anyways? Right?
Then when my life got to a point of brokenness I couldn’t stand anymore and I knew I needed something better for my family, I went to church. I started to pray. I read the Bible. My life started to change, and that was just the beginning. I gave my heart to God and His Son, Jesus Christ.
And after that… came the obedience. It was slow at first, just trying to get to church every week and soak up as much as I could. Then came the more difficult thing: the application of what I was learning. Slowly old bad habits started to die and new good habits started to form in their place.
My life was changing.
James 1:22 says, “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”
So I said to God, “Here God, here is the pen to my life. Please write the rest of my story
because you are a better Author than I could ever be.”
Sometimes, I mess up. I try to yank the pen back from Him and it turns out to be a complete mess – ink blots and all. But hey – aren’t we all a work in progress?
I (try really hard to) obey God because I love Him. My obedience glorifies Him. And that results in His blessings.
If you are at the point of your life where you are straddling the line between God’s way and your way, I encourage you to try doing it God’s way and see what happens. Since I have started opening my heart and my ears to listen to Him and doing as He asks, my life has changed so much for the better. God has blessed me beyond my wildest dreams. He has given me self-esteem and confidence. He has given me love and support. All because I am willing to listen and follow His direction. If we obey God, our faith will certainly flourish.
“ But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.” Matthew 7:14.
Friends, I want to trek down the narrow road. Even if it is narrow and difficult – it’s better than the wide street paved with lies. And the first step is by saying YES to God and His will. It’s taking what the Bible says and putting it into practice. It’s taking that next step that God is asking you to, even if you don’t know exactly what the outcome will be.
Prayer: Father God, help me to be obedient to you. Help me take the next step in the narrow path to Heaven, whatever that next step is. Help me encourage and lift up others on the journey alongside me and help me motivate others toward this road. Take the pen to my story, Lord, and write me Your beautiful words for my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
