I am not a fan of rain. The dreary gray looking sky, hiding the sunshine I love so much. The cold wet droplets hitting me as I walk to my car, ruining my hair (which frizzes easily). I think to myself, why does it even need to rain? Then I remember that the beautiful flowers and trees which I love so much, need rain to grow. The fruit, vegetables and grains that I enjoy eating… need rain to grow. That is how God designed the world.
What about us, do we need rain to grow?
James 1:2-4 answers, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”
Let it grow.
Nicki Koziars says in her book The 5 Habits of a Woman Who Doesn’t Quit, “When we go through hard situations, we can either go through it or grow through it.” This is truth, friends. As much as I don’t like rain (hard situations), I have realized that once I get through the storm in my life I have grown tremendously. My faith in God is stronger and I have learned a life lesson that refines the person I am and how I deal with things.
So many people just want to give up. Give up their faith. Give up on their life. But friends, we live in a fallen world. God didn’t want this to happen to us, but things do happen. And in the good and the bad God is still God and He is good. We can’t have Him be our God only when things are good… only when He is answering our prayers the way we want Him to. Are we only going to be fair weather followers? God can see the bigger picture and we have to trust Him and live in the hope that someday, when we are home with Him, tragedy can no longer hit us. And in the end… if we choose our faith over our circumstances, it will be stronger.
When it hurts so bad you can’t even breathe, lean on God and He will help you breathe.
Friends, I hope that you never have to go through a storm. I pray me or my family will never have to face the tempest. But we will. And are you going to just go through it, or are you going to grow through it? That’s how we can “Develop a Faith that Flourishes” – by using the rain to help us grow.
And In the end… who wins? “The God of peace will soon crush Satan,” Romans 16:20.
I am not an expert at going through hard times. I don’t know your story or what you’ve had to suffer through. But I do know and can say this with all the confidence in my heart, that God loves you. He knows about suffering because His Son, lived among us and suffered and died on the cross.
And we can live in the hope that someday the rain will stop and the sun will shine again. But in the mean time, I’ll praise Him. Even in the rain…
Prayer: Father, I don’t like rain. I don’t like the suffering on Earth. I don’t like the things we have to go through and watch others go through. But thank you for being with us. Please help me grow and get stronger in the trials that I go through. Amen.
