The last thing I wanted to do today was work out. Sweat pouring down my body, my legs wobbling like jelly, and the physical exhaustion after a workout are not things I naturally look forward to. Anyone with me? To be completely honest, I could go for just laying in bed eating a donut or two or three…
So here I am, dreaming about fast food and a world with no gyms. Then I open up scripture and read, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body,” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. And there it goes again – the Word of God putting me in my place, where I belong.
I have always struggled with exercise and eating healthy. Out of all the things I wrestle with, I would consider it my #1 or #2 struggle. Until I met my now-husband a few years ago, I had never set food in a gym outside of high school. And even when he encouraged me to start going, I would make it maybe once or twice a week. So since I can’t make it to the gym, I recently started a home workout program and even THAT’s a struggle. Now, I am not a body-shamer because I think ALL types of women are beautiful, I am strictly talking about being healthy and living a healthy lifestyle. Even scripture says “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come,” in Timothy 4:8.
If you are a person who loves to exercise and have a passion for healthy eating, I am so proud of you! You do something that I wish would come naturally to me and you are a rockstar. If you are like me and struggle with this issue, you are not alone! So what can we do?
- Change Our Mindset – People say you need to “work out for you” but if you are like me and are more content eating your favorite chocolate and sitting on the couch, let’s try thinking of it differently. Let’s think of it as giving GOD our best. If scripture tells ourself that we should honor God with our body then let’s remember it the next time we are trying to skip our workout. Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do, wether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
- Praying to God for Help – Prayer works, friends! I truly believe it. It is shown through scripture over and over that we can ask God for His help in the things we are weak in. If you are struggling with the things you do – pray that God will help you through.
- Seek Encouragement – I strongly encourage you to seek encouragement from friends. If they are a true friends they will be with you in this journey through every high and low and love on you along the way.
Remember, I am writing this for me just as much as any of you reading. This is my personal struggle and I am going to try to hold myself accountable to being healthy for God, if I can’t do it for myself.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word as a guide in this life. Help me to live a healthy lifestyle and to give You my best. Please place people in my life to encourage me along this journey. You are such a great and wonderful God and I praise you for the all the good works you are doing in my life. Amen.
Discussion: Is this something you struggle with as well? If so, what helps you? If this is not something you are currently struggle with please help pray for those who are wrestling with this! Thank you.
